Choose a current annual tax estimate or plan for the announced 2028 mileage charge. This calculator covers annual renewals from a car’s second year.

How is annual electric car tax calculated?

Annual tax combines VED, any eligible expensive-car supplement and, from April 2028, the announced mileage charge. Current standard VED is £200; the supplement is £440. A future estimate holds those current rates constant. Worked examples and dates.

What this estimate includes

Vehicle tax is paid by the registered keeper. The expensive car supplement depends on the original list price and the age of the car. From April 2028, the announced mileage charge adds a further amount.

Why is the future total a scenario?

We use the current published annual VED and supplement, then add the announced launch mileage rates. Future inflation, changes to VED and any subsequent policy changes are not predicted. See the full methodology and exclusions.

What is outside this calculator?

First-year tax, renewals spanning the April 2028 transition, pre-April 2017 plug-in hybrids, exemptions, special classes, vans and detailed billing adjustments are excluded. It does not estimate fuel, insurance, charging costs or company-car income tax.
