Rules were checked on 13 October 2026. The model combines annual vehicle tax, any eligible expensive car supplement, and the announced eVED mileage charge.
The catalogue scenario
Cars are compared at an annual renewal date of 1 April 2028, first registered 1 April 2027, at the mileage you enter (10,000 miles by default). We hold the current annual VED rates constant and add announced launch mileage rates. This is an illustration, not a quote or a forecast of future VED.
Three components
Current standard annual VED is modelled at £200. Eligible expensive cars add £440 in years two to six. Electric cars registered before April 2017 use the model’s £20 annual rate where covered. Mileage from April 2028 uses 3p per mile for BEVs and 1.5p for PHEVs.
The supplement threshold is strictly over £50,000 for eligible BEVs or £40,000 for PHEVs. Factory options and delivery can affect the original list price. Electric car eligibility also depends on registration date.
Unknown prices stay unknown
An advertised starting or on-the-road price is not assumed to be an original tax list price. Unknown entries ask you to confirm the list price and show the mileage component separately and are placed after complete estimates when sorting by annual tax. A confirmed manual list price can be entered in the comparison or calculator.
Excluded situations
The calculator uses VED rates effective from April 2026 to March 2027. Renewals from April 2027 are illustrations holding those rates constant; renewals before April 2026 are rejected because historical rates and thresholds differ. It excludes first-year tax, pre-April 2017 plug-in hybrids, cars registered before March 2001, annual renewals spanning the April 2028 transition, vans, exemptions, special vehicle classes, part-year billing and detailed mileage reconciliation. It does not estimate future inflation, fuel, electricity, maintenance, insurance or depreciation.
Company-car income tax
The separate BIK calculator models battery electric cars only: P11D value × the published BIK percentage × your entered income tax rate. It assumes that one rate applies to the whole benefit and excludes salary-sacrifice effects and other adjustments.
News is a separate layer
News headlines are retrieved from external feeds and link to the original publisher. They do not automatically update the tax model. A feed’s last successful retrieval is not a fact-check date.
