What tax will a new electric car pay?
A brand-new electric car’s first-year VED is £10 at current rates. From year two, standard VED is £200, plus the £440 supplement if eligible. Plug-in hybrids use their confirmed CO₂ band for the first payment. Future illustrations hold current VED rates constant. Official rates.
What this estimate includes
The first tax payment covers 12 months. The expensive-car supplement starts from the second tax payment when eligible, based on the original list price. From April 2028, the announced mileage charge applies to new first licences and eligible renewals.
Is first-year tax already included in the car’s price?
It is often included in an on-the-road quote. Check the dealer’s breakdown so you do not add it twice. This calculator shows vehicle tax separately from the purchase price.
Why is the future total a scenario?
We use the current published first-year, annual VED and supplement rates, then add announced launch mileage rates where applicable. Dates from April 2027 are illustrations. Future inflation, changes to VED and subsequent policy changes are not predicted. See the full methodology and exclusions.
What is outside this calculator?
Relicensing an existing car within its first year, early or repeated relicensing around April 2028, pre-April 2017 plug-in hybrids, exemptions, special classes, vans and detailed billing adjustments are excluded. It does not estimate fuel, insurance, charging costs or company-car income tax.
