Same mileage. Registration dates matter. Annual renewal for every car: 16 October 2026. Estimate using current published VED rates. No mileage charge before April 2028. Enter the actual first-registration date for each car. Calculation assumptions.
A used or pre-registered car does not restart first-year tax.
Start the next five annual renewals on the same date for every car. Confirm each car’s actual first-registration date below.

Five years, with the assumptions shown.

Choose brand-new cars to include the first tax payment and four annual renewals. For existing cars, the comparison starts at your chosen renewal and includes five annual renewals. Keep the start date and mileage the same for every car. The price you pay for a used car does not reset its original tax price or age.

We hold current first-year VED, annual VED and supplement rates constant throughout the five years. Announced mileage charges start only on eligible tax periods from April 2028. Future inflation and policy changes are not predicted. These totals compare vehicle tax, not the purchase price or total ownership cost. First-year VED may already be included in a dealer’s on-the-road quote.

Why two different cars can tie

At the same annual mileage, two battery electric cars have the same announced mileage component. A larger battery or better charging efficiency does not reduce that component. The expensive-car supplement can create a difference when one car qualifies and the other does not.

For example, at 10,000 miles the announced BEV mileage component is £300 for each eligible year. The supplement adds £440 per eligible annual renewal at current rates and can end during your five-year period. Savings are measured only against the selected cars with complete calculations, not the whole market.
